AN INTERNATIONAL TEXTILE ART EXHIBITION IS CURRENTLY TRAVELLING AROUND AUSTRALIA, AND THIS WEEKEND IT CAN BE SEEN AT THE STITCHES & CRAFT SHOW IN SYDNEY! HERE’S A LITTLE GLIMPSE INTO THE LIVES AND MOTIVATIONS OF A FEW OF THE ARTISTS BEHIND THE QUILT PIECES…

by Mindy Cook

We asked Alicia Merrett (UK), Cynthia St Charles (USA), Lea McComas(USA), Dianne Firth (Australia) and Lin Hsin Chen (Taiwan) the following questions:

WHAT ARE YOU….

…READING?

Alicia Merrett:

A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking, the famous physicist.

Cynthia St Charles:

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Lea McComas:

I’m up to my eyeballs in social media.  I’m amazed at how the digital world is bringing us all together.

Dianne Firth:

Mr Mac and Me by Esther Freud (contains insights into Scottish artists/architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife).

Lin Hsin-Chen:

Nature books to gain a variety of knowledge on daily life; and ancient stories and biographies – to learn and gain wisdom.

EXULTANT ABOUT?

Alicia:

The success of my first book on a quilting subject, Mapping the Imagination, which is partly a catalog of my exhibition of the same name at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, UK, last August.

Cynthia:

The great outdoors.

Lea:

My life journey. I wake up every day and ask, “I wonder what today has in store for me?”  I’m never disappointed.

Dianne:

Landscapes and nature.

Lin:

My quilts make me feel exultant.

PERFECT WEEKEND?

Alicia:

Working on a quilt without any outside interruption; a sunny day so I can see the garden in flower, and a walk in the afternoon.  And watching a really good film in the evening.

Cynthia:

Hiking in the Beartooth Wilderness.

Lea:

Three days with my husband in a mountain cabin, a roaring fire, good wine, fine chocolate, sweet tunes, 6-8 inches of fresh powder, a meteor shower and a hot tub.

Dianne:

A trip into the countryside with a simple picnic, family, friends and sunshine.

Lin:

A slow pace on a pleasant day.

THE LAST EXHIBITION YOU VISITED?

Alicia:

In London: Designer Crafts, the annual exhibition of the Society of Designer Craftsmen, where I had some work;  and the annual international Photographic Portrait exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.

Cynthia:

Yellowstone Art Museum’s Auction 2015.

Lea:

The International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas last November.  My work won two awards including the Masters Award for Thread Artistry and a first place in the Portrait Quilt category.

Dianne:

James Turrell ‘A Retrospective’ at the National Gallery of Australia.

Lin:

2014 Horizons of Art Quilts at Fashion Institute of Taipei in Taiwan (11/15 – 12/14, 2014). I am curating the Taiwan International Quilt Exhibition 2016.
