Behind the TV Scenes with Shelley Craft
Earlier this year the Craft & Quilt Fair team welcomed Shelley Craft as ambassador for the 2014 fairs. One of the first jobs was to create a TV commercial, introducing Shelley to fair goers across the country. Nicole, one of the C&Q Fair team members, had the enviable task of sitting in on the shoot and happily snapped a bunch of behind-the-scenes shots for the rest of us. We thought it would be fun to share these with you too!
She also snatched a few moments between scenes with Shelley to learn what motivated her into our world of craft.
1. Do you do any craft regularly?
Nowadays it’s mainly kids’ craft that I have time for. I can whip up an egg carton crocodile in about 45 seconds! Making things is something that the girls and I really enjoy doing. Their imaginations and sense of play is so wild sometimes it really stretches my creative abilities.
2. What do you love about creating something?
Creating for kids certainly gets your mind working overtime – how can I turn this into THIS! I love the challenge but as you know with kids you have to be quick or they change their minds.
3. If you could pick a new craft to learn, what would it be?
I would really love to be able to sew well. I have so many amazing ideas in my head for clothes; all power to seamstresses and pattern makers. What an amazing talent.
5. What is your favourite hand-crafted item?
I think for sentimental reasons rather than skill – I made all of our guest “thank you” gifts for our wedding as well as all the decorations for the ceremony and reception.
7. Any funny craft stories, attempts, epic fails you are willing to share?
When I worked on Saturday Disney (a kids show) we had a craft segment every week and we would have to research and plan for this segment. The challenge was, it had to be done live, in about one and a half minutes, not using anything other than scissors and tape really (as our audience was quite young). I can say now that the tissue box cover got a great run every Mother’s Day!!
8. Do you get crafty with your kids, and what do you make/have you made?
We use all our recyclables to create all sorts of weird and wonderful things from computers and ovens to animal masks.
9. Do you use your sewing machine much?
Yes, I do. I have a borrowed one from mum. (Sorry Mum) It’s about 25 years old and it’s still going strong!
At the moment I’m making linen curtain prototypes for a range that I would love to put out. Who knows? You might even see them in store soon!!
Shelley will be making a number of appearances at selected Craft & Quilt Fairs on opening day, around Australia in 2014. Visit the website for more information.
