5000 Poppies: a tribute of respect and remembrance
LYNN BERRY AND MARGARET KNIGHT FROM MELBOURNE ARE ON A MISSION TO CREATE A FIELD OF HANDCRAFTED POPPIES IN FEDERATION SQUARE, MELBOURNE ON ANZAC DAY 2015 FOR THE ANZAC CENTENARY COMMEMORATION.
They set what they thought was ‘a challenging but achievable target’ of 5,000 poppies in June 2013 and since then this phenomenal project which has taken off like wildfire in craft communities around the country and indeed around the world. With 26,593 poppies at last count, the project is continuing – this is going to be an incredible display for the significant 2015 ANZAC day!
On September 11 – 14, 2014, the Newcastle Stitches & Craft Show will feature a wall where you are invited to cover it with your handmade poppies. Anyone can contribute to the project and the Hunter Group of the Knitters Guild of NSW will be there to collect your poppies. Your handmade poppies can be crocheted, knitted, felted or sewn from any materials. Any shade of red can be used and poppies should be no more than 15 cm in diameter. There is no limit to the amount of poppies that can be submitted by any one contributor and there is no entry fee. So bring your poppies to The Stitches & Craft Show in Newcastle this September and help us create a wall of poppies. At the end of the show, the poppies will be sent to Melbourne to be part of the 5000 Poppies Project which will be installed in Federation Square on Anzac Day 2015. There are a number of patterns on the 5000 Poppies website that you are welcome to use as a guide, then feel free to embellish yours as you wish. This will give the display variety and interest. Thank you to the Hunter Group of the Knitters Guild of NSW for collecting the poppies during the show. |
Further information as well as knit and crochet patterns are also posted on the blog, 5000poppies.wordpress.com and on the 5000 Poppies Facebook page.
