Diamond art paintings
Diamond art or diamond paintings are a relatively new art form to hit the market so we were keen to find out more. Images are constructed in a similar way to cross stitch, in that an image is broken down into small squares – but rather than using coloured cotton to stitch on canvas you are sticking small coloured tiles, often called rhinestones or ‘diamonds’ onto a sticky surface.
To begin, each canvas is printed in high definition and in the same way as a cross stitch chart has symbols and a key to work out which colour cotton to stitch where – diamond painting canvases are printed with symbols and a key or legend is included indicating where to place the rhinestones. The rhinestones themselves are matched to a coded DMC colour code and are 2.5mm in size. One side of the tile is flat which is stuck onto the canvas whilst the other is 5D, giving the design a sparkling finish.
You don’t need a huge number of tools to create these artworks, aside from the sticky canvas and the rhinestones, all you really need is a tray, some glue or gel, tweezers and a drill pen. Most kits come with these basic tools. You will find however, that a storage container will be very handy for keeping all the beads sorted and quickly accessible.
To start, you simply select a symbol, locate the correct colour rhinestone to cover that symbol and then pour some of the rhinestones into the grooved tray. Next, place a small dab of glue or gel on the end of the drill pen (this assists in picking up the rhinestones), then place the flat side of the rhinestone over the corresponding symbol on the sticky canvas. That’s all there is to it!
There are several styles of diamond paintings – those that only require some of the canvas to be covered in rhinestones and then there are some that require the entire canvas to be covered. Diamond paintings also come in a range of sizes so you can try out a small one first before you tackle a major canvas!
