Under GlassSETTING SMALL ARTWORKS, POSTAGE STAMPS OR PRETTY PAPERS UNDER A GLASS CABOCHON GIVES THE IMAGES A MAGNIFIED EFFECT AND MAKES THEM LOOK EXTRA SPECIAL. IT’S A LOVELY WAY TO CREATE PENDANTS FOR JEWELLERY OR FRIDGE MAGNETS. IT’S INCREDIBLY EASY TO DO – AND THIS COULD BE YOUR ANSWER TO EASY CHRISTMAS GIFTS.

STEP 1: Audition your image or piece by placing the cabochon over the paper and decide where you want to position it, then trace around the edge with a pencil. Cut out the image inside the pencil line. Check the size, you may need to trim a little more so it doesn’t extend outside the back of the cabochon. It is also possible to glue the cabochon in place then trim around it, but I found it easier to get a neat cutting line by trimming it to fit first. STEP 2: Add a little dimensional adhesive to the back of the cabochon. If you are using a flat shape such as a rectangle or square which has two sides that appear the same, run your finger over each side and find the slightly rougher side – this is the back. You need just enough adhesive to cover the surface without too much excess, which will only squeeze out from the edges in the next step. STEP 3: Place the back of the cabochon (glue-side) down onto the face of your image and quickly move it into place. Press down gently to get out any air bubbles. STEP 4: Allow to dry – try to leave it for around 24 hours, then paint or use your finger to apply a layer of the same dimensional adhesive on the back of the piece, then allow it to dry. STEP 5: Fridge Magnet: Glue a magnet on the back of your dome using dimensional adhesive, or if the magnet is quite heavy you may need to use glue like Araldite, Tarzan’s Grip, Selley’s Grip – sometimes it’s necessary to experiment and see which works best on the materials you are using. Bezel Pendant: Apply a coat of dimensional adhesive to the inside of the bezel and set in your cabochon. Pendant: Use glue such as Araldite, Tarzan’s Grip or Selley’s Grip to attach the bail to the back of the pendant, then allow to dry. STEP 6: For jewellery, finish as desired: attach the pendant to a chain or thread a ribbon through the bail. Use jump rings to attach to the chain if necessary. |
Notes. If you want a waterproof cabochon, you will need to apply a varnish sealer or clear nail polish to the back of your finished article.
