Hexi Hatband project

Cutting

From the heavyweight paper or lightweight cardboard

Cut seven hexagon templates
From the headband fabric
Cut two, 46cm x 7cm strips

From the fusible heavyweight interfacing
Cut two, 44cm x 2cm strips

Cut one, 31cm x 5cm strip

Method

All seam allowances are 1cm unless otherwise stated.

1. Place a paper or cardboard template on the wrong side of headband fabric. Add a 1cm seam allowance by eye.

2. Turn the fabric over the template and baste into position. Repeat to make seven hexagons. Join them into a row.

3. Take one long headband strip and fold raw long edges in by 1cm. Press.

4. Insert one 44cm x 2cm piece of heavyweight interfacing under the folded edge on one side and fuse in place.

5. Fold one short end to create an arrow point and press. Fold the other short edge in by 1cm and press.

6. Fold fabric in half lengthways so folded edges meet and press.

7. Sew along all edges. Repeat for remaining headband strip.

8. Use ladder stitch to join the straight edge of each strip to each short end of the hexagon strip (attach only one layer or fold of the strip end so that the front of the hat band looks neat).

9. Cut the 31cm x 5cm strip of interfacing to fit unseen to the back of the hexagon row. Fuse in place.

10. Tie the hatband around the wide-brimmed hat and add a few stitches to keep in place.
