Relax and explore your creativity
The popularity of colouring-in books for adults has been an incredible phenomenon this year!
We don’t need much of an excuse to ‘de-stress’ these days, and this back-to-the-future trend is providing the solution for many of us.
Whilst colouring-in books have traditionally been the domain of young ones, go into any store that sells books and you’ll notice an increased space allocated to creative titles like zentangle, doodling, journaling and colouring-in… for adults!
This trend – which is widely purported to relieve stress – was initiated in France, whose chic women set the trend by embracing the activity as therapeutic and (for some) an effective deep relaxation technique. The popularity of books like Secret Garden by Johanna Basford quickly spread across Europe and many parts of the world, and in Australia book sales are soaring, with four of the recent Top 10 Independent book titles devoted purely to this activity.
Women have also taken it up as a way to help them through illness, a pregnancy, to wind down at the end of stressful day or simply to connect with their children. Whatever the reason, there are no rules of engagement. This trend is even expanding into colouring-in fabric!
If you’re still not convinced, try it for yourself on the interactive murals at these events (but be warned the books are such hot sellers they are SOLD OUT in many places):
